Goessel music students rate well at Heart of America music festival

Goessel Middle School musicians fared well Tuesday, March 10, at the annual Heart of America Music League held at Ell Saline middle/high school in Pratt.

?The 11 members of the Central Kansas League brought hundreds of young musicians from the sixth through eighth grades to the festival,? said Mike Connell, band director.

?The festival format,? he said, ?allows for large instrumental and vocal groups, small ensembles, and solos.?

Among awards received, each of the large ensembles got a I or I+ rating, Connell said.

In addition, 18 other Goessel Middle School students took vocal or instrumental solos, and 17 of them received a I rating.

Both the boys? and girls? choir and mixed vocal ensembles were all given I+ ratings.

The seventh-grade ratings were: Tori Hines, vocal solo, I; Mark Schmidt, flute solo, II+ and vocal solo, I; Kara Schmucker, vocal solo, I+; Reece Hiebert, bass clarinet solo, I and Ben Wiens, alto sax solo, I+.

Eighth-grade ratings were: Davis Cook, vocal solo, I+; Georgia Thiesen, flute solo I; Tyler Schultz, vocal solo, I; Gracie Sullivan, vocal solo, I; Shane Goerzen, vocal solo, I; Johanna Hoffman, vocal solo I; Grant Flaming, trumpet solo, I++; Bruce Benjamin, trombone solo, I and vocal solo I; Jonathan Kimbrel, tuba solo, I and Alex Hiebert, vocal solo, I

Vocal students were directed by Greg Bontrager and Connell directed instrumental students.
