Goessel fourth at state Scholars Bowl

The Goessel High School Scholars Bowl team placed fourth at the Class 1A-Div. 1 tournament hosted by Goessel on Saturday.

Immaculata won the title with a 5-0 record in the championship round. Satanta (4-1) finished second, Goessel tied for third with Hanover with a 2-3 record, but Hanover was awarded third based on tie-breaker rules. Linn and Frankfort tied for fifth at 1-4.

Prior to the championship round, the 12 competing schools were divided into two pools.

Goessel and Satanta finished with 4-1 records in Pool A, followed by Hanover (3-2), Centre (2-3), Southern Coffey County and Hartford at 1-4.

In Pool B, Immaculata took first at 4-1, followed by Frankfort, Linn and Hodge?man, all tied at 3-2, and then Hoxie and Pretty Prairie at 41-4.

As for the two Marion County schools, in pool play Goessel defeated Hanover (80-20), Centre (45-30), Hart?ford (30-20) and South?ern Coffey County (40-10), and lost to Satanta (50-20).

In the championship round, Goessel defeated Frankfort (5-0), lost to Satanta (45-20), lost to Hanover (50-20), defeated Linn (90-20) and lost to Immaculata (50-45).

Competing for Goessel were Alicen Meysing, Jordan Schmucker, Luke Unruh, Zach Wiens, Jennifer Meysing and Edel Miller. Wes Schmidt-Tieszen is the head coach, assisted by Andrew Voth.

In pool play, the Cougars compiled a 2-3 record to place fourth. They defeated Hartford (50-30) and Hanover (40-10) while losing to Southern Coffey County (50-10), Goes?sel (45-30) and Satanta (80-10).

Members of the Centre team are Ally Basore, Whit?ney Gutsch, Carissa Shields, Abigail Svoboda, Kristin Vinduska and Max Svoboda. The Cougars are coached by Cindy Wyatt.

?I couldn’t have been more proud of the way my students competed and it was a great way to end their Scholars Bowl career,? Wyatt said. ?I have enjoyed every minute of the time I?ve spent with these outstanding students and thank them for the opportunity to be a part of the experience.?
