Goessel FFA wins district speech title

The Goessel FFA Chapter reached a historic finish at the South Central District Speech Career Development Events Feb. 5 at Chaparral High School.

Members earned 12 medals and two individual championships on the way to earning Goessel?s first district speech team championship.

In extemporaneous public speaking, members had 30 minutes to prepare a four- to six-minute speech. Students drew topics at the beginning of their preparation time and were limited to a book of compiled research conducted prior to the event, without knowing the possible topics.

The top five individuals move on to state competition. In prepared public speaking, members delivered prepared speeches over agricultural topics.

The results for Goessel students follow:

? Extemporaneous: first place, Laird Goertzen; second place, Reece Hiebert; third place, Grant Flaming; 10th place, Heath Goertzen.

Freshmen Division: first place, Reece Hiebert, ?How the Clean Water Restoration Act Violates the Rights of Livestock Producers;? second place, Heath Goertzen, ?Raising the Limit on Deer Tags as a Population Control Measure;? eighth place, Nate Bray, ?USDA?s Be Safe Food Messages;? ninth place, Keenan Stultz, ?Impact of Dairy Goats in the Global Economy.?

? Sophomore Division: eighth place, Daniel Smucker, ?Precision Agriculture;? 10th place, Bruce Benjamin, ?Clean Water Restoration Act.?

? Junior Division: second place, Grant Flaming, ?Manag?ing Upland Game Bird Populations in South Central Kansas;? ninth place, Josh Booth, ?Raising the Solid-Non-Fat Requirements for Milk Compositio
