Goessel district welcomes three new teachers

Three new classroom teachers will be joining the staff at USD 411 Goessel for the coming year.

Robert Tiernay will be the band director, Jennifer?Young will teach middle school math and science and Gina Bergin will teach Family and Consumer Sciences, FACS.

Tiernay completed his master?s degree in music education from the New England Conservatory of Music in 2002 and moved to Kansas to be closer to his wife?s family.

Tiernay taught band at Hesston for three years.?In 2009 he accepted an offer to teach band and jazz in Hutchinson.? Due to budget cuts across the state, the music department in Hutchinson was reduced.

Tiernay is an accomplished director and performer, having performed in numerous jazz bands including the Aretha Franklin Show, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Bethel College Jazz and many others.

Young will be teaching middle school mathematics and science. Most recently, she taught fifth and sixth grades in Hutchinson. In 2005 she was named the Davis Foundation Teacher of the Year in Hutchinson.

Young also has experience as an assistant principal in Lyons.? Her passion is teaching middle school students and said she looks forward to coming to Goessel.

Bergin will be teaching family and consumer science in the high school.

Bergin, a Hillsboro native, received her bachelor of science degree in general human ecology/FACS in 2009.?She taught for one year in Newton before coming to Goessel.

While at Newton, she taught eight different courses in the FACS area.

She and husband John Bergin, the agriculture education teacher at GHS, recently moved to the Goessel community.
