Firefighters lend a hand with STEM camp for kids

Local firefighters assisted the Hillsboro Recreation Commission’s Science Technology Engineering Mathematics Camp with their egg-drop challenge on Friday. The firefighters dropped the eggs from the top of the ladder to see how well the campers protected the eggs, and slowed the container, with the goal of keeping the egg from breaking. STEM Camp, which drew 36 youth, is part of the Hillsboro Rec program run by Greta Wiebe and Tamara Cassidy. During the July 10-14 camp, students were challenged to solve problems using everyday materials to complete their projects, such as building towers, constructing boats and creating a maze.
