Hillsboro Elementary School students pet a chicken held by Hillsboro High FFA member Nathan Unruh during the second annual petting zoo March 12. Groups of students followed a rotation of stops, where FFA members informed the children about the animals and exhibits. Participating members included Ethan Oborny (tractor), Bryce Roberts (sheep), Lauren and Lisa Geis (miniature horse), Andrew Meier (beef calf), Taylor Carlson (dairy calf), Maci Schlehuber (feeds), Nathan Unruh (chickens) and Kale Arnold (goats). Serving as group members were Valerie Klassen, Hannah Bartel, Erin Loewen, Moriah Truitt and Jesse Meier. “I always love the day after the event, when the FFA members discuss the questions they were asked by the elementary students,” said adviser Sonya Roberts. “It really opens the eyes of my students.” The event originally was scheduled for FFA week but because of weather was postponed. “We appreciate the elementary teachers supporting this project, and we hope to continue it,” Roberts said.
