FFA competes at poultry contest

The Hillsboro FFA Chapter participated in the South-central District Poultry Judging and Food Science Career Development Events on Feb. 13 at Marion High School.

Poultry judging includes evaluating the interior and exterior of eggs, evaluating and placing past production hens, identifying parts of chicken, evaluating carcasses and grading chicken parts.

The senior team of Alex Jost, David Winter, John Hein and Mieka Serene placed fourth overall. Jost placed third individually and Hein placed 10th. Other senior team members included Andy Klassen, Brandon Brown, Heather Goldsby and Dianne Sanders.

The Greenhand team of Ethan Frantz, Darren Mueller, Dylan Delk and Landon Herbel placed second overall. Frantz placed third individually.

Members also competed in the Food Science event. The event consisted of an aroma test, triangle test, food safety photos and a written test. The senior team of Briana Loewen, Jost, Winter and Serene placed first overall. Jost placed seventh overall and Winter was 10th. Other participating FFA members included Taryn Mayfield, Brown, Klassen, Goldsby, Sanders, Ty Goossen, Brea Allen, Hein, Frantz, Mueller, Delk and Herbel.
