Essay Contest in Marion County Announced

Florence Advance Lodge 114 is hosting a county-wide essay contest for juniors and seniors in Marion County. The best essay from each of our county’s public high schools will win a $100 scholarship and be entered in the 2019 State Masonic Public School Essay Contest competing for $12,000.00 in scholarships.

Craig Olson of Advance Lodge states: “This year’s essays hinge on the idea that one of the basic tenets of Freemasonry is to be charitable and to impact one’s community through active engagement. Many high schools today require students to spend a certain number of hours each term doing volunteer work or community service. Some people believe this is an excellent idea that promotes good citizenship and cultivates compassion. Others feel that forced volunteerism is not volunteerism at all.” Craig notes that: “Students will write an essay convincing readers to support their position.”
