Districts prepare for graduation exercises

More than 220 students will take part in commencement ceremonies at the six school districts in the Free Press distribution area.

Two graduation ceremonies will include a guest speaker, while others will hear from valedictorians or classmates.

Hillsboro, Centre, Peabody-Burns and Canton-Galva will celebrate graduation Sunday, May 16. Goessel High School?s commencement is Saturday, May 15, and Marion High School?s ceremony is Sunday, May 23.

In Hillsboro, three high school seniors were chosen to speak to their family, friends and visitors at 2 p.m. in the Robert C. Brown Gymnasium.

According to school officials, the valedictorian at Hillsboro, who will be picked from the 49 graduating seniors, will not be announced until later this week.

Five students will each take five minutes to deliver a commencement message to the 36 fellow Peabody-Burns High School seniors at 4 p.m. in the gymnasium.

Shelby Elliott, Joshua Klarr?man, Traylee Woodruff and Jacob Simmonds are the valedictorians, and Julie Wedel is this year?s salutatorian at Peabody.

Canton-Galva High School seniors will hear from their fifth grade teacher, Sue Unruh, at 2 p.m. in the school?s gymnasium.

Unruh will address the 24 graduates to include Kristine Larson, valedictorian, and Samuel Janzen, salutatorian.

Sixteen seniors will receive diplomas at 2 p.m. in the Centre High School main gymnasium. The class of 2010 has selected fellow students to address the student body and guests.

Bud Meisel, retired band director at Goessel High School will address the 30 graduates at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 15.

Goessel?s co-valedictorians are Sierra Dirksen and Lindsey Wedel.

The USD 408 Sports and Aquatic Center will be this year?s location for the 65 graduating seniors at Marion High School.

Valedictorians Jaclyn DeForest and Kaylin Spencer and Drew Maddox, salutatorian will be recognized. Program details were still being finalized at press time.
