Chess team competes at Wichita

Members of the Hillsboro Chess Guild competing at the Pleasant Valley chess tournament in Wichita Feb. 15 were Jordan Fryhover, Abby Fryhover, Jacob Denholm, Zachary Denholm and Matthew Denholm. The Hillsboro Chess Guild had five students competing at the Holy Cross Tournament in Wichita Saturday, Feb. 22.

Zachary Denholm competed in the K-5 Division, but did not medal.

In the K-8 Division, Jacob Denholm placed second and Alex Lubbers 16th. Kayla Gunn also competed.

In the K-12 Division, Matthew Denholm placed ninth.

The Guild?s home tournament will be Saturday in the middle school gymnasium. Teams can register on site from 8:15 to 8:45 a.m., or pre-register on the Kansas Scholastic Chess Associa?tion website (ksca.us). The six-round, Swiss-format tournament will begin at 9:30 a.m.

The KSCA State Cham?pionships will be March 8, at the University of Kansas Student Union in Lawrence.
