Chess students compete in Chicago

Matthew Denholm, second from right, and his Kansas teammates show off the third-place trophy they won in the 16-and-under division at the recent Intercontinental Chess Championships in Chicago. Denholm and Jordan Fryhover, both freshmen members of the Hillsboro Chess Guild, competed in the fourth annual event in which 16 teams from around the world, including Russia, competed with three high school teams representing Kansas. Fryhover?s 18-and-under team placed second overall. The boys were invited and sponsored by the Karpov International School of Chess in Lindsborg for their outstanding 2012-13 competitive season.
