CGHS journalism team tops in Class 2A

The Class 2A championship journalism team from Canton-Galva includes: (sitting, from left) Sierah Pennington, Kelli Nelson, Lauren Ballantyne, Betsy Shobe, Rachel Becker, Abigail Ballantyne and Angelique Rowden; (standing) Keana Haydon, Zach Snow, Emily Ballantyne, Ethan Dailey, Jesse Sykes, Shawn Marihugh, Julia Gormley, Lexi Howard and Katelynn Hiebert. Ballan?tyne is the school?s news magazine editor and Shobe is editor of the yearbook. Placing 21 entries in 20 contest categories, the Canton-Galva High School yearbook and magazine staffs brought home the Kansas Scholastic Press Association 2A State Sweep?stakes Championship for the second time in three years.

Twelve Canton-Galva journalism students competed at the event Saturday at the University of Kansas, where more than 1,000 student journalists represented dozens of 1A to 6A schools.

Two students won individual titles: junior Kate?lynn Hiebert in Aca?demic Photography and junior Julia Gormley in Year?book Theme Develop?ment.

For Hiebert, a first-year yearbook staff member, the awards were unexpected.

?I knew we had a really good staff, but when we got there and competed against everyone else, I realized how good,? Hiebert said. ?It opened my eyes and showed me how good we actually are as a team.?

Jessica Bowman, CGHS journalism adviser, said she knew the title was within the team?s reach, but also that competition would be tough in the 2A category.

?These students are talented and they work hard at what they do. Still, Kansas is known for the strength of our scholastic journalism programs,? Bowman said. ?There were many strong competitors in our division, and we had to earn every award we received. I think that made the win even more exciting.?

Other placings were:

? Hiebert, runner-up in Photo Illustration, and honorable mention in Sport Photo?graphy;

? Gormley, honorable mention in Editing and honorable mention in Yearbook Sports Writing;

? Senior Lauren Ballan?tyne, runner-up in Editorial Writing, honorable mention in Headlines, honorable mention in Advertising and honorable mention in News Writing;

? Senior Betsy Shobe, third in Yearbook Layout Design, third in Yearbook Sports Writing and honorable mention in Photo Illustration;

? Junior Rachel Becker, runner-up in Yearbook Copy Writing and honorable mention in Student Life Photo?graphy;

? Sophomore Zach Snow, honorable mention in Editorial Writing, honorable mention in Infographics and honorable mention in News?paper Sports Writing;

? Freshman Kelli Nightin??gale, runner-up in Cutline Writing and runner-up Feature Writing;

? The team of Shobe and Becker, honorable mention in Video News Package.

Overall, the team?s 48 sweepstakes points topped all schools? totals, even the other divisional winners from 1A to 6A.

The yearbook staff also accepted an All-Kansas award for their 2013 book, ?In Addition to Tradition.?

?It felt really good to win the state championship my senior year, because it was a great way to leave my staff,? said Shobe, 2014 yearbook editor. ?It ended the year on a good note.?
