Centre Elementary School was recognized April 9 at the Kansas Association for Conservation and Environ?mental Education awards celebration in Topeka.
CES received the Kansas Green School of the Year Award, which is given to schools showing innovation, leadership and outstanding environmental stewardship, in addition to incorporating environmental education into their school curriculum.
On hand to receive the award were Superintendent Jerri Kemble and master gardener Kirk Cusick.
Cusick has assisted the pre-kindergarten through 12th-grade students in creating two gardens in the Centre school district.
The award was new in 2009, and is co-sponsored by KACEE and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.
KACEE will be presenting a ?Student Award? ceremony at Centre Elementary on April 30. Guests planning to attend include Josh Svaty, secretary of agriculture, Jodi Macky, Child Nutrition and Wellness Team director, consultant Barb DePew, and Shari Wilson, from KACEE.
