Centre High School?s varsity Scholars Bowl team won the Wheat State League championship Jan. 11 at Hope.
The team of Kristin Vin?duska, Carissa Shields, Ally Basore, Whitney Gutsch and Abigail Svoboda won the title by going 4-2 in the round-robin format.
The Cougars opened by defeating Little River, 50-40, and Solomon, 40-15, before dropping their next two matches, 50-10 to White City and 50-30 to Hope. Centre then came back to defeat Goessel, 50-40, and Wake?field, 40-30.
In junior varsity competition, Centre finished third with a 3-2 record. The Cou?gars lost to Goessel, 80-40, defeated Wakefield, 90-10, lost to Peabody-Burns, 40-25, then defeated Little River, 70-30, and Hope, 50-40.
The members of the JV team were Kate Basore, Dylan Deines, Greg Oborny, Cole Srajer and Max Svo?boda.
Individually, Ally Basore led Centre with 120 points for the day. She was followed by Svoboda (90), Gutsch (50), Deines (50), Kate Basore (50), Oborny (50), Srajer (35), Vinduska (40) and Shields (10).
Southeast of Saline?Centre placed fourth among the six schools competing Jan. 7 at Southeast of Saline.
The Cougars went 5-3 for the day. In pool play, they defeated Hoi?sington 40-30, Russell, 40-20, and Hering?ton, 30-10, before losing to Abilene, 85-20. The team rebounded with a 60-10 win over Wilson.
In the quarterfinals, Centre defeated Council Grove, 40-14, then lost to Washington County, 60-20, in the semifinals. In the consolation round, Centre lost to Beloit 20-10.
Centre was led by Ally Basore with 160 points, followed by Whitney Gutsch (50), Kristin Vinduska (30) and Kate Basore (20).
Council Grove?Centre competed at Council Grove Dec. 17. Members were Kate Basore, Dylan Deines, Cole Srajer, Max Svoboda and C.J. Thompson.
Centre posted a 1-4 record in pool play with a win over Northern Heights and losses to Marion, Junc?tion City, Chapman, Chase County and Hills?boro.
Max Svoboda was the team?s high scorer with 70 points.
Tescott?In a competition Dec. 14 at Tescott, Centre went 2-2 in pool play with a team comprised of Ally Basore, Whitney Gutsch, Carissa Shields, Abigail Svoboda and Kristin Vinduska.
Centre defeated Benning?ton and Chase and lost to Wilson and Sacred Heart.
Basore and Gutsch each scored 110 points to lead the team.
