Centre FFA competes in entomology CDE

Members of the Centre FFA Chapter and horticulture class traveled to Buhler High School March 26 to participate in the South Central District Entomology Career Development Event (CDE).

Members took a knowledge test and identified 40 specimens of insects. The A Team placed fifth overall, with team members consisting of Shania Svitak, Hannah Peterson and James Spohn.

The Greenhand Team placed fourth in their Division, team members were Raeanne Bryant, Karoline Chizek, Valerie Craney, Katie Marler and Rebecca Reneau.
Following the CDE, members toured nearly 38,000 square feet of greenhouses at Stutzmans Greenhouse & Garden Center in Pleasantview.
Students learned about processes ranging from cuttings and seeds all the way to retail sales. Students observed the machinery and equipment used to plant and transplant plants and were impressed with the large automated system.

Even though all types of spring bedding plants, perennials, vegetables and foliage are grown at Stutzmans, the highlight of the trips was seeing how Easter lilies are grown.
