Author, musician to be featured at Oct. 15 LIR

A special session of Learning in Retirement is planned for Friday, Oct. 15, to coincide with the Tabor College homecoming festivities.

The session will feature Steve Wilkens speaking on the topic, ?What you should have learned in Sunday school but somehow did not,? as well as music and inspiration from JoLyn Curtin on the keyboards.

?This should be a wonderful session,? said Connie Isaac, Learning and Retirement director.??It will be filled with great pieces of trivia that you didn?t know.?

Wilkens, Alumni Merit winner for 2010, is a professor of theology and ethics at Azusa Pacific University in Southern California.?A 1977 Tabor graduate in the humanities, he earned? a master?s in theology in 1983 and doctorate in systematic theology in 1988, both from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, Calif.

Wilkens is the author of several popular books on philosophy for lay persons. They include ?Beyond Bumper Sticker Ethics,? ?Good Ideas from Questionable Christians and Outright Pagans,? and ?The Original Dr. Steve?s Almanac of Christian Trivia: A Miscelleny of Oddities, Instructional Anecdotes, Little-Known Facts and Occasional Frivolity.?

His latest book is ?Everything You Know About Evangelicalism Is Wrong (Well, Almost Every?thing).?

Meanwhile, Curtin?s musical performances have taken her around the globe? She has traveled to Ireland, Scotland, Italy, the Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore and Ethiopia.

Patients and doctors describe her music as ?healing.?

In 2004, Curtin was hired by the Methodist hospital at the Texas Medical Center in Houston to perform on a weekly basis. Her recordings have been used in emergency rooms, intensive-care units, birthing rooms and cancer-therapy centers.

LIR programs are in the lobby of Tabor?s Wohlgemuth Music Education Center and begin at 9:45 a.m.

Registration for the entire series is $15 per semester for an individual or $29 per couple.? For an individual session, admission is $4.

LIR participants also can eat lunch in the cafeteria following the program for a discounted price of $3.75.
