Allen wins Class 3-2-1A race on Wamego hills

Joel Allen won his first cross-country race as a Hillsboro Trojan Saturday, besting a field of 125 runners in the Class 3-2-1A division at the Wamego Invita?tional.

Allen covered the hilly 5-kilometer course that will determine state champions later this fall in 16 minutes, 59 seconds.

?He ran another excellent race,? coach Stuart Holmes said. ?He also posted a very good time on such a challenging course for this early in the season.?

Also competing in the boys? varsity race were Brett Mueller (15th, 19:03) and Josh Richert (34th, 19:46).

Running in the junior varsity field of 168 competitors were Avery Frantz (25th, 20:41), Clay Etheridge (36th, 21:21) and Daniel Gray (68th, 22:09).

?For Avery to run this well in only his second meet as a freshman is great,? Holmes said.

Hillsboro?s three girls ran in the 4-K JV race. Samantha Ens placed 17th in a field of 124 runners with a time of 19:40, Brenna Blackketter was 53rd in 21:16 and Erin Wiebe 55th in 21:28.

Coming?Hillsboro will run Thursday at the Peabody Invitational. Races begin at 3:30 p.m.
