n A plea was made for volunteers to help with the next stage of shoreline stabilization at Marion Reservoir planned for Nov. 10. Volunteers would be asked to cut large cedar trees, operate a tool similar to a jack hammer and attach anchor chains around the trunks of trees placed along the shoreline near Cottonwood Point.

n Zane Unruh, 19, of the Goessel High School FFA chapter, was named the national winner of the Proficiency Award Area of Emerging Agriculture Techology?Entrepreneur?ship/Placement at the 2003 national FFA convention in Louisville, Ky., Oct. 31. Unruh?s work has included developing high-tech maps and downloading data to help make the family farm more profitable.

n The Hillsboro High cross-county team finished as the runner-up in the Class 3A state championship race at Wamego. It was the third second-place finish in the past four years for HHS. Running for the Trojans were Aaron Yoder (sixth overall), Daniel Yoder (eighth), Kody Borg (23rd), Karl Magnuson (33rd), Sean Leihy (62nd), Nate Holmes (71st) and Ric Johnson (74th).

n Tabor College (7-1) lost its first football game of the season, dropping a 27-3 decision to Ottawa University (7-1).

n Hillsboro (6-3) advanced to the state football playoffs by winning its district with a 30-0 win over Halstead. Caleb Marsh and Daniel Deckert each scored two touchdowns for HHS.

n Marion (8-1) advanced to the state playoffs with a 41-14 blowout of Southeast of Saline to win its district title. Steven Boone and Casey Nelson each scored two touchdowns for the Warriors.
