n Alumni of Lehigh High School erected a monument to their former school in late October. The structures that comprised the facility were demolished in 2002. Lehigh High School was closed in 1966 in the consolidation move with Hillsboro and Durham. The unified school district used the facility for a junior high for several additional years. Bricks from the original building, constructed in 1920, were used for the memorial, which stands on the former school property.

n Tabor College is in the process of presenting its $10.5 million capital campaign to the community of Hillsboro and Marion County. At the heart of the campaign is a proposed new dormitory.

n Kansas residents are encouraged to take flu shots following the state?s first influenza death this season. The victim was reported being between the age of 45 and 64.

n Workers from the Marion County Road and Bridge Depart?ment removed old syringes, needles and vials that health department workers apparently dumped into an abandoned cistern near the courthouse some 30 to 35 years ago. Special authorization was required from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment before the medical waste could be removed.

n The USD 410 Board of Education again voted not to install a new public-address system in the Robert C. Brown Gymnasium. The system most recently proposed, priced at nearly $20,000, was deemed to be too expensive. The current sound system has generated numerous complaints.

n The Tabor College football and volleyball teams earned berths to post-season playoffs this past week. The 15th-ranked football team defeated McPher?son, 26-7, to earn a spot in the NAIA playoffs against North?western Oklahoma State while the volleyball team defeated Kansas Wesleyan to earn its third straight KCAC tournament title and a berth in the Region IV tournament.

n The Peabody-Burns football team lost its Class 2A sectional showdown against a talented Frankfort squad, 43-21. The loss left PBHS and coach Chris Young with an 8-4 record for the 2003 season.
