In the aftermath of the collision two weeks ago that killed two teenagers with local ties at the junction of U.S. highways 50 and 77 just north of Florence, some Marion County residents are circulating a petition demanding an overpass be built at the intersection. They contend the Kansas Department of Transportation plan to put stop signs at the interaction is inadequate.

Carol Duerksen, Goessel, recently co-wrote a booklet for The National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign in Washing?ton, D.C. Titled ?Pathways to Prevention.? The booklet is a guide to help youth leaders in congregations across America.

The first known case of West Nile Virus meningitis in humans was confirmed last week by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. The 36-year-old patient from Geary County is recovering.

Nathan Hiebert, Monica Leihy and Stuart Holmes are the new teaching faculty in Unified School District 410 this fall. Hiebert will teach business, Leihy will teach family and consumer sciences, and Holmes will teach social studies.

Marion County commissioners, in an effort to reduce budget expenditures, nixed the $1,500 they had previously budgeted for a Labor Day fireworks show. ?I don?t see how we can spend money for fireworks when we are laying people off,? said Commissioner Howard Collett.

This year?s Marion County Relay for Life raised about $15,700 for the American Cancer Society. Sixteen teams of walkers participated in the annual 12-hour event, which was held at the Tabor College track in Hillsboro this year.
