Five years ago

n Temperatures in the mid to upper 90s didn?t seem to affect the turnout for the Hillsboro Arts & Crafts Fair on Saturday, but it may have shortened their stay, according to Christy Wulf, fair director, as buyers found their purchases quickly and returned home. Police Chief Dan Kinning estimated the crowd at 45,000.

n Judy Christensen, chair of the planning committee of Marion Art in the Park, said ?a good crowd? came to this year?s show in Central Park, and that most vendors were reporting strong sales.

n Clarence Weyand, 91, Canton, finally received the eight medals he earned as a participant in the Battle of the Bulge during World War II but had never received. The presentation of the medals was by Rep. Jerry Moran.

n For the second straight week, the Hillsboro High School football team scored late in a game after victory was out of reach. This week it was a 20-6 loss to Haven, the second defeat for first-year head coach Len Coryea. Adam Scheele scored the late Trojan touchdown on a 40-yard pass from Josh Boese.

n Former HHS football coach Dustin McEwen was inducted into the sports hall of fame at Fort Hays State University, where McEwen was a three-year starting quarterback during the early 1990s.

n About 53 new radios will be bought online this week for county fire departments and emergency medical crews in the southern part of Marion County. Money for the radios is coming via the U.S. Office of Domestic Preparedness via Homeland Security.

Ten years ago

n Cool weather may have affected attendance at the 1999 Hillsboro Arts & Crafts Fair, but it also prompted brisk sales as buyers chose their purchases quickly and then went home, according to fair director Aldina Franz.

n Christopher Dick, a graduate of Hillsboro High School and Tabor College, has returned to his college alma mater to teach English. ?It was definitely a goal,? Dick said. ?I feel a big connection here.?

n C.J. Hill ran for 226 yards and four touchdowns on 18 carries as the Hillsboro High football team improved to 3-0 with a 40-8 win over Nickerson.

n The Tabor College football team dropped to 0-2 with a 66-6 loss at Sterling College under first-year coach Tim McCarty.

n Stan Williams, a 35-year-old Marion man, says he has found his passion for racing as a driver with the newly formed Midwest Street Racing Association. He began racing at age 16.

n United Feed, LLC, (now called Countryside Feed) has moved from the grain elevator in Hills?boro to its new $4 million plant in the city?s industrial part. An open house is set for Sept. 25.

n Klassen Dairy Inc. received eight awards and RockHomes Holsteins received four at the Kansas State Fair last week. Both dairies are in rural Hillsboro.

n Former Marion County Sheriff June Jost has released a book he wrote about his experiences in county law enforcement. The book is titled, ?The Days of June: Recollections of a County Sheriff.?
