Five years ago

n The Goessel City Council and the USD 411 Board of Educa?tion met jointly at the invitation of Superintendent John Fast to talk about ending the trend of declining enrollment in Goessel schools. The district had registered a decline each year since 1996, losing a total of 68 students and some $440,000 in state support.

n The Tabor College football team capped a heart-stopping end to the 2004 regular season with a 30-29 win over Saint Mary University at Lansing. Two weeks earlier, Tabor won a game in double overtime, then lost the following week in an overtime contest.

n The Tabor College volleyball team lost to Bethel College in five games in the semifinals of the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament. The Bluejays were co-champions of the KCAC for the regular season.

n Five members of Marion?s Mid Central Activities Association Mid Division co-champion team received first-team all-league honors. Dale Vogel was picked for both offensive and defensive line, Drew Looper for offensive line, Tyson Heide?brecht for defensive line, Casey Nelson as an offensive back and Josh Kelsey as a defensive back. The Warriors were 4-1 in the division and 6-3 overall. Four players for Hillsboro, 1-4 in the MCAA Central Division and 2-7 overall, received honorable mention.

n Hillsboro Middle School was one of only 11 schools in the state to receive the Confidence in Public Education Task Force Challenge Award Nov. 19 for state math assessment scores.

n A ?Girlfriends Getaway? event sponsored by the Hills?boro Chamber of Commerce Business Promotions Committee attracted women from as far away as Wichita for a catered meal, foot massage and a free photo and goody bag. The invitations were distributed during the Arts & Crafts Fair in September.

n Marcia Brubaker, Goessel Elementary School music instructor, was named the outstanding elementary music educator for the South Central District of the Kansas Music Educators Association.

Ten years ago

n In response to prolonged dry weather over the past several weeks, the Marion County Board of Commissioners declared a county-wide burn ban Friday.

n The Tabor College football team capped Tim McCarty?s first season as head coach with a 73-9 loss to McPherson College, finishing the year at 0-10.

n The Tabor College men?s basketball team started the season with a pair of impressive victories?97-64 over Central Christian College and 85-68 over Haskell University?at the McPherson College Classic. Bluejay Kevin Koehn averaged 21 points for the two games.
