n Good weather, good fun and good entertainment drew sizable crowds to Marion?s annual Chingawassa Days festival over the weekend. The Little River Band sang to a huge crowd Saturday night.
n Concerned about the recurring blue-green algae bloom at Marion Reservoir, Hillsboro officials will ask federal lawmakers this week to provide funding for the chemical treatment of the lake in order to protect tourism in Marion County.
n Rise Vineski, a senior-to-be at Hillsboro High School in fall, will spend eight weeks training with the National Guard this summer. She said she hopes the experience will lead her into a career in law enforcement.
n Work on Phase 2 of the Main Street renovation project in Hillsboro is expected to begin this week. The project, which includes 11⁄2 blocks of North Main from the railroad right-of-way to Third Street, will replace the street and add new curbs and gutters.
n Butler County Community College has begun a massage-therapy program at its Marion campus. Carolan McFarland is an adjunct faculty instructor.
n Hillsboro High School pitcher Marissa Diener, catcher Emily Ratzlaff and utility player Laura Lindsay were named to the first team of the Mid-Central Activities Association all-league softball team. Shortstop Amy Duerksen received honorable mention.
n In baseball, HHS outfielders Jared Fish and Adam Scheele received honorable mention for the MCAA all-league baseball team.
n Len Coryea and Sandy Arnold were named as new head coaches at HHS for football and volleyball, respectively.

n The Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce announced it would be hosting a ?Y2K? forum for the public on June 17 at the Tabor College Cafeteria. The forum will address computer problems that could occur when the calendar turns to 2000.
n Bethesda Home in Goessel is celebrating its 100th anniversary this weekend with a historical display, entertainment, a meal and a multi-media presentation Saturday, and a community worship service Sunday.
n Hillsboro Middle School is one of seven middle schools in the state that will participate in a pilot program for a new math curriculum called ?Mathematics in Context.? It is published by Encyclopedia Britannica.
n Collette Burton, a Hill City native and 1999 graduate of Fort Hays State University, was named the new volleyball coach at Hillsboro High School. She succeeds Becky Carlson, who had been the coach for the past 16 years.
n Jerod Haase, former basketball standout at the University of Kansas, was on the Tabor College campus Friday to speak to players and coaches participating in the Mid-America Youth Basketball Tournament over the weekend. He also signed copies of his book, ?Floor Burns.?
n Marion County commissioners were asked Monday what could be done to prevent the construction of two facilities that would serve as a fattening house for about 1,000 hogs each. The facility is being proposed by partners Trent Miller and Johnny Burkholz.
