n Tabor College head football coach Tim McCarty resigned to accept the head coaching job at East Central Oklahoma State, an NCAA Division II school in Ada. In his five years at Tabor, McCarty turned a dismal program into a team that was ranked in the top 20 and qualified for the NAIA Division II national playoffs this past season.
n John Larson, a senior at Canton-Galva High School, is one of only 41 seniors nationwide to achieve a perfect score of 36 on the American College Testing assessment test he took in late October.
n The USD 410 Board of Edu?cation discussed the trend of decreasing enrollment during its regular February meeting. Hillsboro?s enrollment, now at 653 students, could be down to 516 by 2008.
n The Marion City Commis?sion appointed Gene Winkler as its representative for seeking a Kan-Step grant that Winkler said could result in a movie theater and community center for the city by Thanks?giving.
n Olde Towne Underground will soon be opening as a new coffeehouse in Hillsboro, occupying a spacious area under the first floor of the Olde Towne Restaurant and Bakery on Main Street. Owner Linden Thiessen said he hopes to offer entertainment and a Christian environment in addition to various coffee-based drinks.
n The Tabor College men remained atop the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference with a 79-68 overtime win over McPherson. Tyson Ratzlaff, a Hillsboro High School alum, scored 21 points to pace the Bluejays, who are 11-3 in the KCAC and 14-10 overall.

n Randy Whitely of Oregon signed a contract with Preferred Medical Associates to be a new physician with the Hillsboro Family Practice Clinic.
n The Hillsboro High boys improved to 14-0 with a 52-41 win over Lyons. C.J. Hill scored a team-high 18 points. Audrey Loewen scored a season-high 16 points as the HHS girls improved to 10-4 with a 50-39 win over Lyons.
n The Hillsboro-Marion combined wrestling team won its first full-field tournament in program history Saturday at Southeast of Saline. Usually run in a duals format, this year Southeast ran a classic tournament bracket for the first time. Six Trojan-Warriors won their respective weight classes: Daniel King (103), Chris Coryea (119), Oliver Good (145), Lance Unruh (189), Bill Shearer (215) and Chris Byer (275).
