n Hillsboro City Admini?strator Steve Garrett told the city council that it isn?t city government?s responsibility to determine whether the community needs the new ?Windover Hillsboro? housing development being proposed for the city?s north side. Garrett said the city?s only duty is to make sure any new development is done according to city codes and requirements. The 135-home development is being proposed by private investors from Lawrence.
n City Administrator Steve Garrett gave the city council its first look at a contract being offered to the city of Lehigh that would make the Hillsboro Fire Department responsible for Lehigh?s fire protection. Lehigh would pay Hillsboro a set fee to provide the services.
n A Topeka district judge?s ruling that Kansas public schools have been inadequately and unfairly funded by the state legislature prompted a comment of agreement from Gordon Mohn, superintendent of USD 410. Mohn said rural schools may not benefit significantly from funding increases that might follow, but he has seen evidence of funding inadequacies in urban schools such as in Wichita.
n Hillsboro and Marion basketball teams split games in their season opener on Friday. The Marion girls defeated Hills?boro, 59-44. Brandi Peterie-Shipman and Amy Tajchman led the Warriors with 16 and 12 points, respectively, while Emily Ratzlaff and Amy Duerksen led Hillsboro 11 and 10 points. In the boys? game, Eric Weinbren?ner scored 16 points and Tyler Peachey 13 to pace Hillsboro to a 68-36 win over Marion. Nickolas Hett was the only Warrior to break double digits, scoring 13.
n The Hillsboro wrestling team opened its season with a sweep of Stafford and Nicker?son in dual competition. Ryan Janzen and Alex Goossen scored wins by fall against Stafford toward a 54-24 score. Andrew Bina won by fall in a 36-9 win over Nickerson.
n Marion wrestlers lost to Council Grove 41-30 but defeated Wichita Independent 48-27. John Barr and Chris Feeby won by fall in the first match. Chris Brewer and Jimmy Shipman recorded pins against Indepen?dent.
