Five years ago

n Demolition workers began to remove the charred shell of the building formerly used by the Hillsboro Mennonite Breth?ren Church. The building was destroyed by fire March 7.

n Matt and Judy Krebs, and daughters Landry, 5, and Anika, 6 months, are preparing to leave Hills?boro next week to serve in a mission setting in violence-torn Kosovo.

n The USD 410 Board of Education, needing to reduce its budget for the coming school year, voted to nonrenew the contracts of teachers Michelle Goldsby, Sunshine McEwen and Michelle Faul.

n Quilts and Quilt Racks will open its doors May 1 as a new business in Hillsboro. It is owned and operated by Diane and Dwayne Claassen.

n The Goessel school board hired Curt Graves as principal for grades 7 through 12. Graves has been teaching science at Sterling Junior High School. He succeeds John Fast, who has been named superintendent for the Goessel schools.

Ten years ago

n Larry Nikkel will be inaugurated as the 12th president of Tabor College during a ceremony Sunday afternoon in the college gymnasium.

Nikkel, former president of the college?s board of directors, has been serving as interim president of the school since last summer.

n The Hillsboro High School forensics team is preparing for state competition this weekend, climaxing one of the most successful forensics seasons at the school in recent memory. HHS will have 11 entries in the contest. The program is directed by Terry Bebermeyer.

n The Agriculture Mechanics class at Hillsboro High School did the welding on a batting tunnel created for the newly launched high school baseball program. Class members involved in the project are Dallas Bartel, Jesse Hamm, Matt Foth, Todd Redger, Scott Winter, Craig Schultz and Chris Coryea.
