n About 200 children participated in the annual Kiwanis Club Easter Egg Hunt on a cloudy and damp Saturday. Some 3,000 pieces of candy were distributed.

n The owners of the Hillsboro Free Press have purchased the Hesston Record and plan to return the online-only newspaper to print beginning May 5.

n Low voter turnout characterized the April 6 local election in Hillsboro and Marion. Byron McCarty and Shelby Dirks won uncontested seats to the city council in Hillsboro while Martin Tice outpolled Troy Leith in a race for mayor that was only technically contested. Leith?s name was on the ballot, but he had withdrawn because of a move out of town.

n The Hillsboro City Council approved an agreement to sell the majority of the used bricks from the recent Main Street renovation project to a Bixby, Okla., company for a price of 15 cents per brick?or $70,000 to $100,000 total. The company will leave behind about 30,000 bricks for local use.

n USD 410 Superintendent Gordon Mohn is recommending nonrenewal of three qualified elementary-school teachers in an effort to trim $117,000 in salaries and benefits in light of budget restraints.

n The Hillsboro boys rolled up 191 points to run away with the eight-team Marion Relays Thursday. Seniors Tyler Peachey, and Aaron Yoder each won two individual events as HHS claimed 11 gold medals in 18 events.

n Marion dominated the Hillsboro Invitational Golf Tournament Thursday, winning the four-man and six-man competition and placing third in two-man. Nickolas Hett led Marion with a score of 77 over 18 holes.

n Lillian Bookless has begun as director of Main Street Ministries, a non-profit organization in Hillsboro that aims to help individuals and families in crisis.

n Rhonda Loucks is the director of a new food bank in Burns called the Burns Community Pantry. The operation officially opened in March.

Ten years ago

n Delores Dalke was re-elected mayor of Hillsboro with a 458-314 victory over Lewis Hagen in the April 6 local election. Clariece Schroeder defeated Don Isaac 250-181 to win the city council seat in the East Ward and Len Coryea defeated Mark Brown 173-159 to win the West Ward seat.

n Hillsboro High School opened its first-ever season of baseball with three wins in four tries. The inaugural game was a 15-5 win over Chase County. Tim Hein hit the first Trojan home run in the third inning. Austin Franz pitched all five innings to pick up the win.

n Freshman Holly Lindsay pitched a three-inning no-hitter in her varsity debut as Hills?boro defeated Marion 21-0 in the season opener.

n Hillsboro High?s two-man team of Joe Woods and Ryan Bina remained undefeated after the first two golf tournaments of the season. They won the eight-team Centre Invitational and then the 11-team Hillsboro Invitational.
