? We may never have everything we need, but probably far more than we deserve.
It?s easy to slip into the ?poor me? mode in our culture. Life seems tough on the side of the fence we happen to occupy. You know how it goes. We work too hard, get paid too little. We pay too much for what we buy. We don?t have time. We can?t keep up. We can?t get a break. We?re ignored. We?re picked on. We?re out of luck. We?re victims.
Enough, already.
Life brings struggles and challenges, but most of us are better off than we admit. We may not have everything we want, but we have a lot. We may want more than we have, but we probably have more than we deserve?once we stop to think about it.
And that?s what Thanksgiving Day is for?stopping to think about it. It?s a day to step outside our daily routine long enough to look around and see where we are and how we got there. Then, for most of us, it?s a day to confess our self-centeredness, recognize our blessings…and give thanks for unmerited favor.
As humans, we may never fully comprehend contentment, much less aspire to it. But, if we are fortunate, maybe we?ll rediscover the things that are actually worth chasing after: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. If we stop to think about it. ?DR
