What we need is a ‘cold shot’

For many years I have resisted getting a flu shot, but an article in the newspaper?pointed out to me by my better half?led me to get one this time around. It didn?t hurt and it didn?t make me sick either.

What I should have gotten, though, was a cold shot. I?ve had two colds already and don?t know what I did to deserve either one of them. Cold shot don?t really exist, but I think the way to avoid colds is to stay away from other people and sleep about 10 hours a day?neither of which I am able to do.

I?ve mentioned a miracle drug for stopping the dry hack during the night. It is called Tussionex and, amazingly, makes it possible to sleep all night even if one hacks a little.

I didn?t know how I was going to make it through the weekend with the clinic closed, so I called the hospital and asked for the doctor on call to see if I could get the prescription refilled. It was called in to the pharmacy and all was good.

The first night the cold hit, I somehow crawled into bed and ended up between the fitted sheet and the mattress pad. All night I tried to get my arm out from under the sheet but it kept getting caught in the pocket.

What an ordeal that was.

Sometimes when one tries to help it would be better if things were left alone. About two weeks ago I thought I would hide some of the checks we got in the mail that hadn?t yet been deposited so they wouldn?t be easily seen in case of a break-in.

But then I forgot I hid them, and didn?t remember until last Friday. From now on I will be more careful, or at least tell someone what I?m up to.

My brother, who was here for Thanksgiving, read my column last week and said the only reason he hasn?t had cranberries for as many years as me is that he isn?t as old.

Brother Mark also said he hasn?t missed worked because of illness since 1978. I wish I could say that, although there have been many days I have worked when I was sick.

When the news broke of the terrorist attacks in Mumbai, India, I pulled out our world atlas to see where it was located.

I scanned the map for a long while but I couldn?t find it. It wasn?t until I googled it did I learn that the city used to be called Bombay.

It?s not often you hear a network announcer make a mistake, but the other night the announcer said you are watching, ?A…B…She.?

Since it was recorded I rolled it back to make sure I heard correctly and it was the same the second time around.

The biggest treat of the weekend for me was the KU-Missouri football game at Arrowhead. I still don?t like it that they have sold out for the almighty dollar and have taken the games off of the campus but the players don?t decide those things.

The players do decide who wins, and that was a game for all time. The team that was supposed to win didn?t win, and the team that didn?t have a chance going in rose to the occasion time after time. This will be a game video that will be used for motivation for years to come.
