Support has come from far and wide

We got back from Atlanta late last Monday night so I didn’t know what was in the paper until Tuesday morning.

I was aware that a spadea was being sold to commemorate our twenty years at the Free Press but I was a bit overwhelmed when I opened the paper and saw all of the support we received from far and wide.

Thank you to all who contributed to my journalism scholarship fund in this way. I wasn’t even aware this was going to be a part of it—so thank you each and every one who had a part in making this happen. I also thank our sales and design departments for making the scholarship a part of the ad­­­­­­­­­­­vertising package. When I find out how much of the ad price went for the scholarship I will let you know.

I was glad to have made the scholarship fund official this past week so now anyone can donate to the fund if they choose. Even though I don’t need to sell any books to establish the scholarship, I would like to sell at least 300 of the two volume sets of more than 1,000 of my partly nonsense columns that I have written during the past twenty years.

I am hoping to have the books here by Dec. 10, however, you may pre-order a set online or come in the office and preorder a set of books and then pick them up to avoid the shipping charges; and if sales tax is applicable you will pay that online or in person. Buying the books themselves is not a tax deductible event but a donation to the Hillsboro Community Foundation for the scholarship is. If you wish to make a donation to the Scholarship Fund with or without buying the books, it is a separate transaction and is tax deduct­ible. Make out your check to the Hillsboro Commun­ity Foundation, and mail it to P.O. Box 273, Hillsboro, Kansas 67063. Please write “Free Press/Joel Klaassen Journalism Scholarship Fund” in the memo line.

If you have Dish Satellite Service like we do you will know that ABC Channel 10 has raised its price higher than Dish is willing to pay to have them on its satellite service.

I called to complain and asked for compensation since we are not getting that channel or the guide that goes with it.

The person I was chatting with offered me $5.00 off of my bill and I wrote to just forget it. I did ask for the same discounts they were offering new customers which is much less per month and she said she couldn’t do that, which is what I knew she would say.

A couple days later I got a call or an email, don’t remember which now, where a supervisor level person told me she could knock $30 off of my next bill and I accepted that.
