Signs of fall are in the air

The cool front that came through our area on Friday night finally made being outside tolerable again.

I know the college students moving into the neighborhood is another forerunner of cooler weather. Fall is just around the corner.

It seemed like there were more pesky bugs in the air this summer, too. Add that to the high humidity from all the rain and high heat, and spending time in the great outdoors was almost intolerable.

We are excited to see all the construction going on in our neighborhood. Having attended the groundbreaking ceremonies for both the Tabor College Shari Flaming Fine Arts Center more than a year ago, and the MB Foundation groundbreaking about a month ago, both projects are now in full swing.

We hear the powerful earth movers and sand trucks from both the front and back of our house.

We noticed the waterline in our parkway was marked with blue flags one day; the next the construction workers were digging a big hole in our front yard in order to tap into the large city waterline that is buried in our front yard. I’m guessing it is at least an 8-inch line that will supply water to the fine arts center.

I have to give the construction company credit for putting up with all of the rain while trying to make this project happen.

They also bored a large plastic pipe under Lincoln Street to make the connection.

I know there will be plenty of water pressure to serve us and the new fine arts center with pipes that big. Glad we were able to help.

With school starting, please be careful when driving around our schools because kids of all ages don’t always pay attention like they should when going to and from school.

It’s been fun to watch the Olympic Games these past two weeks. I am especially fond of track and field, swimming, gymnastics, beach volleyball and volleyball, in that order.

A while back I asked in this column if anyone had any experience with the condition OPMD. I didn’t hear from anyone.

I was diagnosed with this rare adult genetic form of muscular diastrophy last November by my neurologist at the KU Medical Center.

I am just advising you of this now because it was suggested to me that I use my walking stick to try to prevent falls that seem to be happening on a more regular basis.

I think for the most part you wouldn’t know about my condition just by looking. I think my brain is still working for the most part, but I am affected most by balance issues and a third leg might help me.

We remember seeing some of these same issues with my mom, only then it didn’t have a name.
