Meeting Bay was a great day

I went to the press box during halftime of the Tabor-Bethel football game Saturday to thank our announcers for the great job they had done this season broadcasting the home football games.

That would be Lee Wald?ron and Blake Buhrman, who were being backed up this day by former Tabor Bluejay Jake Schenk.

Little did I know the person being interviewed during the halftime break was going to be the former Tabor great Rolland ?Bay? Lawrence. He was in town to congratulate James Monroe for breaking Bay?s career rushing record this year.

Not only did Lawrence own that Tabor record, he went on to play for the Atlanta Falcons for eight seasons and still holds the Falcons? record for career interceptions at 39. He was selected to play in one Pro Bowl during that time.

Even though Lawrence played for Tabor more than 40 years ago, he looks like he could still play the game.

It was my thrill meeting him and having a short chat after the interview. I may have even promised him some free pizza whenever he gets back to Atlanta.

We also appreciate the sponsors who made the broadcasts possible. They are Ampride, Great Plains Federal Credit Union, Vogt?s Hometown Market, Hills?boro Ford and Midway Motors, as well as MB Foundation, Ag Power and Hillsboro State Bank.

Since I?m old enough, I attended the Lifelong Learning session this past Friday at Tabor College.

Featured guest was KAKE-TV?s Larry Hatte?berg, whom I have learned to know as a friend during the past 30 years or so.

He shared several of his Hatteberg?s People features, which I had seen when they ran on TV. What I didn?t know about those features is that it takes about three days to edit them to a three-minute segment on the air.

He told of his experiences with Dennis Rader, the infamous B.T.K. of Wichita. There was a computer malfunction on this segment; I would really have liked to see since we lived in Wichita at the time and worked for the Wichita Sun, which was KAKE-TV?s newspaper

I stopped by the new bowling alley the night last week I pancaked on the rocks behind my house. They invited me to bowl a few frames, but I declined and said I would be back when I was feeling better.

It appeared the entire Tabor bowling team was there practicing, and the enthusiasm was at a high level.

I don?t believe I have ever seen it so bright in there.

My part in the move has basically come to a standstill with my broken rib. There really isn?t much I can do right now.

I was told by my physician?s assistant it takes four to six weeks to heal. Others have told me two to six months. Only time will tell.
