List is long for giving thanks

Anyone can find reasons not to be thankful, but when I think about it, my list for positives far outnumbers the negatives.

This column isn?t nearly long enough to list everything I am thankful for, but I want to mention a couple of things from a business perspective.

First and foremost, I am grateful for the terrific group of people with whom we work every day here at the Free Press. They are very talented and care about doing the right thing for our customers and each other.

We also appreciate our advertisers who support us each week and for our readers, too. Both groups make our business possible.

You may have already read about Russell and Jeanne Groves, who care about our community and have created an art gallery at their own expense to raise funds for the purpose of establishing a bigger public library in Hillsboro. Whether it?s a new building or an existing space does not matter.

They both spoke of their passion for libraries at a recent Chamber luncheon and how it is really possible to create a new library by generating seed money to be paired with grants. They compared their vision with how more than 2,500 Carnegie libraries were built in the 1900s.

The Groves have donated artwork created by his mother and her father to benefit the Hillsboro library. Instead of just writing a check to support a good cause, you also can take home a beautiful piece of original art for your home.

The art is on display at 110 N. Main in the spot formerly occupied by Supreme Floor, which has moved to bigger quarters across the street.

At the Hillsboro Community Foundation dinner last week I learned a new strategy to be implemented when you are about to hit a deer on the highway.

As it was told, you hit the accelerator instead of the brakes because if you hit the brakes, the front of the vehicle dips down and the deer comes up over the hood. If you hit the gas the front of the vehicle stays up and knocks the deer down.

This is totally contrary to what a person?s natural reaction would be. Good luck.

Something happened this past weekend that hadn?t happened in my family before. Sisters Janet and Elaine and I drove down to Tulsa to see brother Mark?just the four of us.

Mark plays in a couple of bands, so we had the opportunity to see him perform both nights we were in Tulsa. One is an Allman Brothers tribute band and the other is the Jennifer Marriott Band.

We had a great time, including talking about the old days. We all learned things we didn?t know.

This Thanksgiving marks the 66th straight year I won?t be eating cranberries, although I am thankful for them because many family members really like to eat them.

You won?t hear Bill Snyder say anything about injuries, but that?s what I believe was the cause for the Wildcats? first defeat against Baylor.

Say what you will, but K-State isn?t the same without free safety Ty Zimmerman and a few others who were missing from the lineup.
