CBS blew it with KU coverage

If CBS Sports had any clue, it wouldn?t have cut away from the last few minutes of the KU-Mizzou basketball game in some of its markets this past Saturday.

The message boards lit up like the Fourth of July when it happened with messages claiming the posters would never watch any CBS programing ever again.

CBS blamed it on sun spots, which made no sense because Wichita and Topeka kept the game on and Kansas City went to the Big Ten game of losing teams.

How does this happen? Easy. We don?t have enough people in our markets to satisfy the advertisers. Big Monday games featuring Big XII teams also start airing well into the first half because the network is finishing up a Big East game and, as far as I know, they have never left one of those games early.

With the digital age, the feedback is instant when a network pulls this kind of malfeasance. Right away, everyone knows what has happened and where.

I was opening the mail the other day when Nancy asked me how big the natural gas bill was. I said, ?It looks like it?s about 51?2 by 81?2.?

Actually, it was about $56, which isn?t too bad for this time of year.

When I saw that Willie Nelson was going to be at the Cotillion this week, I was half tempted to go. And since the tickets were more than I am used to paying, and I would most likely have had to go by myself, that was that.

Many years ago, we did go to his Whiskey River club in Dallas. Of course, he wasn?t there, but we did hear a very good band called Calico. Good enough for me to buy an LP record, which I still have and have converted some of the tunes to digital.

A large group of folks, including the two of us, took in the Pork Chop Dinner sponsored by the Marion County Relay for Life committee at the Marion VFW this past Saturday.

The food was scrumptious, so thanks to those who had a hand in preparing it. I would recommend putting this event on your calendar for next year.

I wonder how many people still use a shoehorn to put on their shoes in the morning, or whenever one puts them on.

My research shows that the shoehorn, first made from animal horns, have been around for hundreds of years. The modern ones are made of metal or plastic, but no matter what they are made of, it is a very handy piece of equipment to have.

I have made a point to collect ticket stubs from places I have been and events I have attended for the past 20 years or so. They used to fit into a checkbook box, but now I have been using a larger box to contain them all.

Recently I went through them, and realized I must be a sports fan since many are from KU football and basketball games.

Many are from concerts we heard at the Cotillion, the zoo and Botannical Gardens.

A good number were admission to high school plays and musicals.

Movie tickets were more frequent five years ago and earlier, and the last movie we saw in a theater was in Februrary 2010.

One of the most memorable places visited was Alcatraz in San Francisco. That place has intrigued me since I was a kid.
