Flying the world took time

If you were wondering where I got the money to fly to all those places I mentioned in last month’s column, (see hillsborofreepress.com /opinion/partly nonsense if you need your memory refreshed) it covered a span of more than 50 years, so I didn’t pay for them all at one time. Some trips were for business and pleasure paid by others’. I knew I would forget a couple of airports and I did. Salt Lake City, UT, Love Field in Dallas, and Rochester, MN, because of bad weather in Minneapolis, MN. There were no issues that I know of except once landing in Atlanta we had to circle around because there was another plane on the runway, some other flights were so scary I can’t even mention them here.

I have never turned down a cookie when offered to me for my entire life that I can remember. My favorite homemade cookies are oatmeal raisin and chocolate chip or M&M—the more chocolate the better. My favorite store-bought cookies are Oreos, which showed up in our kitchen recently. The neat thing about Oreos is that you can twist them apart and have two cookies with frosting on both.

We had lunch with Jerry and Kathy Jones—friends from long ago (they left Hillsboro in 1982)—at the new Main Street Cafe in Durham on Feb. 7. I had the Friday special which was superb and we all took some homemade coconut cream pie home for later. I have tried to be really careful when walking lately so that I don’t fall, but as careful as I try to be, it isn’t always enough. So I stepped off the curb, north of the cafe, did a 180 and landed on my arm on the sidewalk. It hurt like crazy and I may have yelled a bit. Joyce Barkman and two young men came to my aid. The guys got me back in the car and off we went. I extended my three-day rule to ten. Found out ten days later that nothing is cracked, but it still hurts.

Did you know that the average person’s eyes blink 14,000 times a day? And that means they are closed for a total of 23 minutes a day. This comes from an audiobook I got from my sister, Elaine.

Well, now I’m not sure what to do. The recipe said to set the oven to 180 degrees, so I did, but now I can’t open it because the door faces the wall.
