As a new academic year begins this week for several of our school districts, it?s time for drivers to heighten their vigilance as they approach schools zones, and anytime they?re cruising down streets during the half hour before and after the school day as students walk and ride bikes between home and school. You never know when or where a youngster will dart across a street without warning.
We commend USD 410 and the city of Hillsboro for working together to make traffic-flow changes around the elementary school this year. The changes, which were detailed in last week?s Free Press, should go a long way to lowering the odds of having a tragic incident in that critical area. Now it?s up to parents and other adults to step up and adhere to those new traffic codes each and every school day.
Our children are our greatest resource. ?DR
