Trojan triumphs

It was a super Saturday for fans of Hillsboro High School athletics as the volleyball team and cross-country runner Emily Sechrist won state titles in their respective sports. It?s been 23 years of close-but-not quite for Trojan volleyball, but that trend ended abruptly when a Hillsboro team that finished third in its own league sailed through the competition at state with a 5-0 record and darn-good looking championship plaque. Congratulations to coach Sandy Arnold and her uncommon team. It was a thrill ride for those of us who watched events transpire in Salina?s Bicentennial Center.

Sechrist?s triumph at Rim Rock Farm near Lawrence was a mild shock?not in the sense that she hasn?t shown talent in this her freshman season, but that she outran the field to become the first individual state champion ever at HHS. That saying a lot, considering the strength of the boys? program over the years, and it?s an affirmation of coach Stuart Holmes? efforts.

Girls, we salute you. You are champions of your sport, but you have shown yourselves to be champions of character, too. That?s the best triumph of all. ?DR
