Tradition and innovation

Tradition and innovation come together each year during the Marion County Fair. For people with an extended history in the county, the fair marks the beginning of the end of summer?a thought that can be either tantalizing or terrifying, depending on your anticipation of school.

As you will see in this year?s fair preview, many aspects of this year?s county fair will be familiar?the opening parade on Wednesday, the 4-H competitions, rodeo shows, watermelon feeds, church fair suppers, the demolition derby…. Continuity brings a certain stability to our lives, especially for those of us with deep roots here.

But each year, the fair board looks for something new to keep the event fresh and appeal to more people. The Susie McEntire concert on the Sunday prior to the fair is one example.

Savor tradition, enjoy the new. Fair week is a good week. Be sure to experience it. ?DR
