Last week we posed a serious question: Given the success of our Kansas colleges?Wichita State, Kansas, Kansas State and Tabor?could the current basketball season get any better for local hoops fans? We thought it could, and we were right. Three of our high school teams?Centre girls, Hillsboro girls and Hillsboro boys?are preparing for state tournaments this week after winning their respective sub-state titles Saturday night.
The Centre girls, under coach Alan Stahlecker, will be making their second consecutive trip to Emporia for the Class 1A-Division I tournament. We congratulate the Cougars on their success and wish them well.
For the Hillsboro teams, the accomplishment seemed eerily ordained with the alignment of several milestone years: it?s been 15 years since Hillsboro has qualified both teams for state in the same season; it?s the first state berth in 10 years for the boys; it?s the fifth consecutive trip for the girls; and it?s exactly 40 years since Hillsboro has played in a Class 2A state tournament. We wish the best for a couple of deserving teams with two special coaches, Nathan Hiebert for the girls and Darrel Knoll for the boys.
For Trojan fans who relish success via league affiliation, there?s more to celebrate. This year the Central Kansas League will be sending both girls? and boys? teams from the same schools to state tournaments in three classes: Hillsboro in 2A, Hesston in 3A and Pratt in 4A. Add the Lyons girls to the 3A state lineup, and it?s been a landmark season for the CKL.
Hey, we know there?s a lot more to life than success in athletics. But it is a special event for those fortunate enough to be a part of it. We see it as the dessert that adds zest to our daily bread. And this season, how sweet it is! ?DR
