Sober assessment

We are impressed with the way the staff at the Hillsboro Family Aquatic Center responded following the near-drowning of a 3-year-old in June. Rather than being content with the happy ending, they initiated a process of assessing what they?ve learned from the event.

Two of their four recommendations had to do with physical changes at the center, and two with pool rules. What surprised us in the city council discussion of the latter was the bigger issue of parents challenging the authority of staff to enforce the rules that are in place. It could be helpful now and then for parents to make suggestions how a rule might be tweaked to make it more effective. But to challenge the authority of pool staff to enforce pool rules is, at best, poor modeling for the youngsters in their charge. At worst, it puts child?ren at risk for accidents in the future. ?DR
