If you need proof that you don?t have to be a big school to be a great school, Marion County has two perfect examples. Goessel?s reputation for excellence in academics and music is known statewide and the district has been honored again this year with the Governor?s Achievement Award as one of the state?s top performing schools.
In the opposite corner of Marion County, the Centre school district has been receiving notoriety of its own. You can read in this issue (Page 2B) how Centre Elementary School students wowed state leaders in two different settings, making an impressive presentation as the ?iPad Chefs? at a technology conference hosted by the University of Kansas, and receiving a national award for its character-education program called ?Character Buddy.?
We salute the pacesetters in both districts, superintendents John Fast at Goessel and Jerri Kemble at Centre?and, of course their team of dedicated and enterprising teachers?for proving that small schools can be big achievers if given the opportunity and resources to compete. ?DR
