When the 24th annual Marion County Toy Run rumbled from Marion to Hillsboro on Saturday, Nov. 4, we unofficially kicked off the season of thankfulness and sharing. The effort of participants to gather and deliver toys for children from deserving families should remind those of us who live comfortably to be thankful for the privilege. Ultimately, it also should prompt us to begin thinking how we might share some of our abundance with people who have less than they need.
Recent natural disasters as close as hurricanes in Texas and wildfires in California have resulted in unprecedented loss and destruction. Some of us will be moved to contribute to the relief efforts there as thousands of people wait for the simple luxury of electrical service and basic housing.
Families in Marion County have needs as well, though often hidden from view. Churches and various local organizations are uniquely positioned to identify and meet these needs, but they could use our help. If you know of a Marion County family in need of Christmas gifts for their children, contact local service clubs and other philanthropic organizations in your community. —DR
