Saving history

Not everyone appreciates history, but Friday?s gathering at the Lost Spring Station monument near the town of Lost Springs was a good event for those who do. It was an educational morning, but many of us who were there also felt a personal connection to the past as we stood where early generations of American pioneers paused to rest on the way to their pursuit of happiness.

We appreciate the commitment of the Shields family?several generations of them, actually?who have preserved this one significant spot in history for so many years. They have made it possible for future generations to discover and enjoy it for themselves.

Likewise, we salute the Cottonwood Crossing Chapter of the Santa Fe Trail Association for helping to fund and develop the location into a historic interpretive site for the future. In the end, you have done us, and our descendants, a great favor. ?DR
