Sad irony

It is a sad irony that as Memorial Day approaches, the Veterans Administration is embroiled in a disgraceful scandal regarding its care for the veterans it was formed to protect and serve.

Reports about VA employees ?gaming the system? for bonuses and leaving veterans waiting months to receive crucial care have emerged in 10 states. In Kansas, management and personnel problems have been reported at the VA hospital in Topeka and veterans in Liberal have been without a doctor for two and a half years.

Our veterans deserve better than a scandal-ridden second-class health system where some die waiting for basic care.

On Memorial Day we honor those who gave their lives for our country. In the current environment, we must also remember the veterans who survived and our sacred obligation to care for them.
