Pursuit of excellence

It was a flashback to two years ago: Hills?boro High School cross-country runner Emily Sechrist and the Trojan volleyball team won state championships on the same day. History repeated itself Saturday, but with a twist. In 2011, both titles were in Class 3A; this year?s were in Class 2A, thanks to a surprising student enrollment drop over the summer.

The change in classification certainly doesn?t diminish the accomplishment. Out?standing athletes and teams are found at every level, and they generally rise to the top through the state playoff system. We commend and congratulate these Trojans for representing themselves and their community with excellence.

Allison Weber?s sixth-place finish in state tennis last month was a noteworthy accomplishment, too; it was the third time the HHS junior has medaled at state. On Saturday, the Goessel girls? cross-country team placed fifth in Class 1A and Sophie Freuler earned a state medal by placing 15th.

The high school fall sports season is down to football now. Both Marion and Peabody-Burns have made the state playoffs this year. We salute them for excellent seasons and wish them well as they seek to realize their championship dreams in the post-season. ?DR
