Key gathering

Hillsboro and USD 410 constituents will have a unique opportunity to hear and share information and insights about the future of the community by participating in the public forum planned for 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 9, in the high school auditorium.

The initial motivation for the gathering was the unexpected enrollment drop of 52 students this fall in USD 410. Because state funding is tied to enrollment, the local district faces a significant budget dilemma. The board has already approved a reduction of three staff positions with additional cuts under consideration.

It soon became apparent to local leaders that the dilemma is more than a school issue: School enrollment reflects a community?s population. That?s why the event is now sponsored jointly by the city and the district around a unifying question: ?What is important to you about Hillsboro?? The inferred next question likely would be: ?What can we do to preserve and build upon the community qualities we value??

Don?t expect solutions to emerge in this first discussion. If the public is made aware of the issues and can articulate its priorities, that would be a significant first step. If you care about the future of your community, make it a point to participate. ?DR
