We encourage the Marion County Board of Commissioners to seriously consider the idea suggested by Chairman Bob Hein (Page 1) that the next step in solving the jail issue is to create a “jail committee” that could take the lead in forming a plan for the future.
The challenge likely will be to find enough volunteers willing to put in the kind of time that may be necessary to accomplish this task. But in principle, making a cooperative effort to tackle this challenge could go a long way to pull the county together as we go from here. If we can work together now to solve the jail issue, maybe we can join energy and ideas for additional solutions down the road.
Hein is right in saying there is widespread agreement that something needs to change in the way we house prisoners. Whether it’s to have our own facility or to use existing ones in other locations is a good place to start talking. —DR
