Ignore ignorance

Voltaire, the 18th-century French philosopher and author, is credited with saying, ?I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.? One wonders if he?d hold to that conviction on free speech if he was aware of the hate-speech propagated by the Westboro Baptist Church. As a man of deep conviction, Voltaire probably would. And so should we, as distasteful as the church?s rhetoric is. The best approach to the group?s expected protest in Marion on Sunday is to ignore it. The worst approach would be to dignify their efforts by stepping into their gutter by responding in a similar vitriolic spirit. Any fool can yell in ignorance. It takes courage to ignore the nonsense of it. ?DR
