Harvest grace

We are learning these days that phrases often considered trite still carry truth. At least three come to mind: Wheat is a hardy crop. Miracles are possible. God?s grace is a mystery.

The 2011 harvest is reinforcing these maxims. It was barely a month ago that this year?s wheat appeared to be in dire straits. A lack of rain and some premature heat stunted the crop?s growth and farmers were hoping for the best in a seemingly bad situation.

Well, with combines rolling, we appear of have gotten the best?or at least more than we thought we would. The harvest in Marion County appears to be of excellent quality and the yield is a strong ?average?? which is great news.

So we add to the lore of wheat?s enduring resilience. We have renewed faith that at least on occasion live-giving rains can come in the nick of time to save the day. And once again we find ourselves in a fortunate situation while other areas of our state deal with disappointment. Have we merited such favor? Not likely, but that?s what grace is all about. It?s a gift we haven?t earned. Embrace it humbly. ?DR
