The revelation late last week of the new legislative maps, and the changes in district boundaries and representation they prompted, felt like a political version of fruit-basket upset here in Marion County. Many of us will need to learn new numbers for our House and Senate districts as well as new names for the people who will be representing us in Topeka next year.
Though Bob Brookens? late decision not to seek re-election for a third term as the representative for the 35th District in the House was not a direct result of those new maps, his loss is the keenest disappointment of all. We understand and support his decision to focus on the needs of his law practice at this time, but we certainly will miss his common sense, his compassionate conservative values and his staunch commitment to independent thinking and truth-telling in Topeka.
Brookens? support of appropriate funding for public education was critical for Marion County and Kansas during a time when some conservative legislators, possessed either by short-sightedness or a shameful political agenda, were pushing for continued cuts even when the state?s improving economy did not warrant them.
Marion County voters who will remain in District 35 would do well to replace Bob Brookens with a person of similar convictions and integrity. Thank-you, Bob, for your selfless service to our county and our state the past four years. ?DR
